About
From my narrative watercolor series of Plato's ancient world to recent sculptural pieces several elements indelibly seep into my work from supraliminal origins: antiquity, the sea, and the classical elements of nature. Braided in my creative process is the inescapable influence of the collective unconscious which for me is the vehicle reaching over centuries for my art. When working, the masters are in my studio and awareness orchestrating my journey over millennia, and this is the field I interpret from. I capture authenticity from natural materials of cotton and wool textiles, wood, gesso, water, gilding and pearl. The enduring qualities of metal are choice in my environment and in my work. The commission to gold leaf over 100 furnishing and architectural details of the 90,000 square foot villa in Cairo, Egypt for the president of Hyundai Motors brought me to a beguiling relationship with the skill of gilding in 24 karat yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, copper and silver which I incorporate in my fine art. Use of my background in architecture and structure is also evident in the three dimensionality and construction of my work.
My formal education, career, and years of teaching in art and graphic design solidify that art is a command. The hands must be trained through practice for technical acuity, the mind by persistent acquisition of knowledge and continual process of inspiration. In this calling I press myself with the challenge of pushing materials from their intrinsic qualities and into new collaborations. Further interpretations are presented with each individual piece.
